Children Of Divorce Pay More For College
Rice University and the University of Wisconsin have released a study which shows that the children of divorce are severly disadvantaged when it comes to paying for their college tuition. Students from families with divorced or remarried parents pay twice the share of their college education as compared to their peers whose parents remain married to each other.
The study showed that students whose parents where still married to each other contributed about 23% of their own college expenses. But children whose parents have remarried have to pay 47% of their college expenses. It’s even bleaker for those whose parents are divorced and not remarried, they have to cover 58% of the costs.
The findings are troubling for college-bound students with divorced, separated or remarried parents, especially given shifts in financial aid policy that require families to contribute a greater share of the cost of college.
As expected the results of the research enforced the already held view about the effect of divorce economically and on education. but it also illuminates the way these two things intersect and strengthen each other. “What my research does is help to explain one mechanism by which divorce can be detrimental to kids,” Ruth N López Turley, associate professor of sociology at Rice University and co author of the study said.
One of the surprising results of the survey was that it showed that remarried parents act the same way as the parents who are divorced (but who haven’t remarried) when it comes to paying towards thier children’s college expenses – both as a portion of the their overall income and a percentage of the enitire need. “We expected the remarried parents to make smaller contributions, but we didn’t expect the difference to be that big,” said Turley.
Students heading for college will have good cause to be concerned as a result of this study particlarly if their parents are reamrried, spearated or divorced, especially because of the changes in financial aid policy requiring families to shoulder a larger portion of college expenses.
Whilst the data set used in the study was quite old, it was drawn from a sample of 2400 dependent undergraduate students and interviews with their moms and dads of the National Post Secondary Student Aid Study of 1995-6. It was the most recent data with enough data to enable the researchers to be able to come to the comparisons the researchers did draw.
