Menu Ideas For A Camping Holiday
While camping and caravanning are becoming more popular, a good thing I say, there are a few individuals who cannot see the attraction and one of the obstacles is “how can I cook for my family when there are limited cooking facilities?” Granted, camping brings to mind pictures of hikers croweded round a gas stove and a meal comprising a can of Heinz baked beans or canned soup or stew – hardly tempting. This need not be the case when you have a caravan kitchen. The only limitations are your imagination and some basic safety procedures.
In general caravans kitchens have at the very least 2 burners, a grill and a thermostatic oven and many models incorporate a microwave as well. You can easily prepare the same meals that you cook at home. Its a great indulegence on a sunny morning to open your caravan door onto the great outdoors and enjoy the ingredients of a full English fried breakfast while taking in the view. But, there could be a few ideas for meals that you could be wiser to leave alone:
• Fish and chips – the aroma of fish can settle in your soft furnishings and in the main it is not the best idea to undertake deep frying. Anyway, you would be wise to take advantage of the wonderful chippies all over the the United Kingdom.
• Any course that calls for flaming is a no-no, bear in mind that your caravan insurance policy could exclude paying out on any damage or accidents that follow from this.
• Traditional roast lunch with all the usual accompaniments. Depressing to consider the amount of washing up this would entail and what could be better than a traditional lunch at a charming pub while on your holiday.
Barbecues are certainly popular and compact kits is easy to acquire, but should the unpredictable British climate prove to be a wet squib you want quick and straightforward meals to prepare, with minimal work and washing up and the best flavour. Here are a few suggestions:
• Chicken Provencal – chicken sections are steeped in garlic, herbs, red wine. Drain and fry until crisp on the outside the chicken and then cook with a mixture of vegetables carrots, onions and peppers and a tin of tomatoes in a medium oven in a covered dish for approximately 30 minutes. • Simply roasts, such as baked ham (if there isn’t a nearby supermarket rotisserie) or beef.
• 3 course meal, a cold starter, followed by a juicy steak, green salad and potatoes roasted in the oven as an entree and for pudding, chocolate pots – or of course anything your heart desires.
Whichever way you wine, dine and snack in your caravan, remember to cut your costs by getting your insurance through a reputable motorhome insurance comparison site and all that saved cash can go towards fine dining and Cordon Bleu meals!
